Committee Meetings in Barcelona

Competitions Committee Two separate committee meetings of the Centenary Tennis Clubs Association have been held at the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona-1899. CTC President Juan Maria Tintoré led a meeting of the organisation's Committee of Management, attended by Petr Simunek of ICLTK Praha, Lars Myhrman (Kung KLK) , Gunnar A. Streidt (Rotweiss) , Jurgen Buttkus (TC Geneve), Juan Mª Tintoré, CTC President, Donald Macleod (Cumberland LTC), Garbhan O Nuallain (Fitzwilliam LTC), Maurizio Romeo (TC Parioli), Pedro Navedo (La Magdalena), Berta Tintoré (CTC Secretary), Marco Gillardelli Counsellor), and J. I. Soler Cabot (RCTB 1899).

In addition, the Competitions Committee met to prepare the 2012 agenda and sort the groups for the organisation's key competitions. Chaired by Mr. Simunek, and also attended by Mr. O Nuallain, Mr. Juan Mª Tintoré, Mr. Marco Gilardelli and Berta Tintoré, the Committee confirmed plans for the traditional events calendar, and announced additional plans to for a new international event to be organised by Royan Garden Club in France to celebrate their centenary, as well as special events set to take place in London, organised by Roehampton Club to tie in with the Olympic Games.

Sarajevo recalls its tragedy

The President of the Centenary Tennis Clubs Association, Juan Maria Tintoré, joined the Delegation of the Council of his city, Barcelona, in attending events held recently to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the siege of the city of Sarajevo.

Empty red chairs represented each of the 11,541 victims, as the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina marked the anniversary of the beginning of the three-year siege of their capital city by Serbian troops that began on April 6th 1992.

Juan Maria Tintoré, an Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo, founded the RCT-Barcelona Sarajevo junior tennis tournament in 1997.Sarajevo

Roehampton Club Olympic Invitation

The Centenary Tennis Clubs Association is delighted to announce that our member Roehampton Club will be welcoming members of CTC member clubs visiting London during the Olympic Games (July 27th to August 12th).

The Club, which is located approximately 6 km from the All-England Club at Wimbledon where the Games will be held, has announced three initiatives described further on their website.

These include:

  1. Courts available for booking by visiting CTC members
    Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August
    Monday 6th August to Friday 10th August
  2. Afternoon mix-in tennis event for up to 48 people
    Tuesday 31st July, 2pm to 6pm
  3. Centenary Tennis Clubs Reception and Dinner
    Tuesday 31st July, 7.15pm

Spanish legend Manuel Orantes to be inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Manuel Orantes, the Spanish tennis star of the 1970s and 1980s who captured the 1975 US Open title and played an instrumental role in Spain’s Davis Cup efforts for many years, will be inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame this year.

Orantes, 62, who is originally from Granada and now resides in Barcelona, reached the world No. 2 ranking in 1973, and he remained in the year-end world top-10 for five consecutive years. In addition to his notable US Open victory over Jimmy Connors, he was runner up to Bjorn Borg at the 1974 French Open. In all, Orantes won 33 singles titles, and compiled an impressive record of 647-247. He has a career doubles record of 298-155 and won 22 titles.

 Orantes was an integral member of the Spanish Davis Cup team from 1967-1980. In his first year playing, 1967, the team advanced to the final, falling to the Australians. In Davis Cup records, Orantes is tied for the most number of years played (14) with Sergio Casal and Manuel Santana. Orantes' Davis Cup career resulted in 60 wins and 27 losses, including 39 singles victories. In 2009, Orantes was presented the Davis Cup Award of Excellence by the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Federation. He was also a member of the victorious Spanish team that won the 1978 World Team Cup. Orantes is the fifth Spanish inductee to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. 2011 Annual General Meeting

The 15th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Centenary Tennis Clubs was held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland on November 19th with 15 delegates from 13 member clubs in attendance.

The meeting was highlighted by the Committee of Management elections, at which current President Juan Maria Tintoré of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 was re-elected to serve the organisation from 2011-2014. He will be joined on the committee by founder club representatives Lars Myhrman (Kungliga LTC), Gunnar A. Streidt (LTTC Rot Weiss Berlin), Jürgen Buttkus (TC Genève) and Donald Macloed (Cumberland LTC), and member clubs representatives Garbhan O’Nuallain (Fitzwilliam LTC), Maurizio Romeo (TC Parioli), Petr Simunek (I. Cesky LTK) and Pedro Navedo (Real Sociedad de Tenis la Magdalena).

Four new clubs were accepted into the Association; Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro (ESP), Rot Weiss Baden Baden (GER), Garden Tennis Club de Royan (FRA) and Tennis Club Padova (ITA), bringing the total number of affiliated Centenary Tennis Clubs to 59.
